Staff Backend Engineer - Experiments

This role is based in Sydney, Australia with hybrid work options available.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead the technical vision for Pilot, Canva's A/B testing and experimentation platform.
  • Build a technical roadmap for AI-driven product insights.
  • Shape the architecture and design of the experiments platform.
  • Mentor and guide engineers through complex problems.
  • Drive cross-team initiatives across Product Platform.

You're probably a match if:

  • Experience developing distributed web applications on the JVM, particularly with Java.
  • Knowledge of computer science fundamentals and distributed systems.
  • Experience in large distributed cloud environments, ideally AWS.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Experience with large distributed data processing systems and SQL.

About the team:

The Experiments team is part of PIE (Product Insights Enablement), responsible for building internal platforms that help Canva make confident product decisions.
