About the job

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

The Google Home team focuses on hardware, software and services offerings for the home, ranging from thermostats to smart displays. The Home team researches, designs, and develops new technologies and hardware to make users’ homes more helpful. Our mission is the helpful home: to create a home that cares for the people inside it and the world around it.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience in developing and maintaining backend software systems.
  • 5 years of experience building, operating, or debugging distributed systems, event-driven architectures, or connected IoT device platforms.
  • 5 years of experience with software development in Java.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • 5 years of experience across the stack with experience or strong enthusiasm for mobile/frontend development (Android Kotlin, iOS Swift, or TypeScript).
  • Experience leveraging generative AI, developer agents, and modern LLM tooling to supercharge personal and team development velocity.

Responsibilities

  • Own full-stack feature delivery from device telemetry and cloud microservices down to UI in the Google Home App.
  • Design, build, and operate resilient backend services managing high-volume real-time data, automated scheduling algorithms, and demand-response events that save gigawatt-hours of energy.
  • Shape and implement the future of interoperable smart home ecosystems by integrating with Matter, Google Home Platform (GHP), and unified device models (UDDM).
  • Integrate LLMs, AI agents, and automated diagnostic workflows (e.g., auto-RCA, AI-assisted code reviews) into development cycles to dramatically accelerate shipping velocity and maintain system reliability.
  • Partner closely with Product Managers, UX Designers, Hardware NPI, Firmware Engineers, and external ecosystem partners to transform ambitious energy concepts into polished consumer realities.

Hey, I'm Stan

Software Developer & Creator of Top Jobs Today

I'm a software developer, and over time I realized I cared mostly about roles at big tech companies - not just whatever happened to show up on LinkedIn or generic job boards. But those sources weren't enough - some roles were delayed, or never posted at all.

So I built this website to solve that. It scrapes fresh job postings directly from official company sites, figures out what kind of roles they really are, and sends them as email alerts - simple, fast, and focused.

Hope it makes your search easier too. Wishing you the best of luck - and I'm really glad you're here!
